This mural honours the deeply personal story of Anne McInerney, a South Australian mother whose son Nicholas Leo McInerney, from the Eyre Peninsula served and died in WWI.
The artwork captures Anne’s quiet yet enduring grief of a mother left behind: Two black and white hands tenderly holding a single red poppy, Nicholas medals and a letter. The envelope symbolises Anne’s tireless efforts to seek answers—writing letters in the hope of discovering what happened to her son and his final resting place. Her letters spanned the course of a decade, from the initial contact of news that her son had been wounded, to finally hearing where he was laid to rest.
The red poppy, the only element in colour, represents remembrance, that we will remember their sacrifice, and the love that never faded. This mural serves as a poignant reminder of the silent resilience and heartbreak of those who waited at home and who carried the burden of loss during wartime.
